An Extended Look: What 26 Minutes of Gameplay Actually Confirmed

Rockstar’s first gameplay release for Grand Theft Auto VI ran 26 minutes, was captured in-engine on PlayStation 5, and premiered on Netflix before reaching the studio’s own channel. It is now the single largest source of confirmed information about how this game plays.

A six-star wanted system, and police that have to find you

The wanted system goes to six stars, up from five in GTA V. The more substantial change is underneath: police build a description of you from what witnesses actually saw — your face, your clothing, your vehicle — rather than knowing your position the instant you are spotted.

That is a structural change to how chases work. Changing clothes or changing cars stops being cosmetic.

The Criminal Profile

A new system replaces the honour and reputation meters of previous Rockstar games, tracking whether you operate like a professional or leave a mess behind. Rockstar has not published the mechanics behind it, so how much it actually governs remains unknown.

The phone

Snapmatic returns. New apps shown include one for checking a vehicle's value, lock status, alarm and whether it has a tracker before you take it, and a rideshare app. The vehicle app in particular reframes car theft as something you plan rather than something you improvise.

Scale, in Rockstar's own terms

Around the presentation, Rob Nelson of Rockstar North gave the first official comparison: the map is roughly twice the size of GTA V's and about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, with Vice City alone around twice the size of Los Santos. Nelson also said his own playthrough of the story plus some side content ran about 80 hours, and Rockstar has cited more than 600,000 NPC animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA V.

Note what is not in that paragraph: a figure in square miles. Rockstar gave a comparison, not a measurement, and never published an official size for GTA V either. Every absolute number circulating is an estimate stacked on an estimate.

The Netflix premiere

The presentation went out on Netflix at 3pm ET before reaching Rockstar's own YouTube channel and website at 9pm. It reportedly drew 31.1 million views on Netflix in four days plus roughly 17 million more on YouTube.

Rockstar has not characterised the Netflix arrangement as a formal partnership in its own materials, so we are describing what happened rather than what it was called.

What it did not answer

  • Nothing about PC. Nothing about multiplayer.
  • No technical detail — no frame rate, no performance modes, no install size.
  • No antagonist, and nothing about how switching between Jason and Lucia works.
