The confusion, untangled

GTA Online and GTA 6: What Has Actually Been Said

Two questions get treated as one, and they are not the same. Will GTA Online keep running? Yes, that is confirmed. Will Grand Theft Auto VI have its own online mode? Nobody has said.

Last checked: September 11, 2026 Status: Pre-release

The confirmed part

  • Confirmed

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, February 2026: “I have every reason to believe we'll continue to support GTA Online” after Grand Theft Auto VI releases.

  • Confirmed

Zelnick again on the August 2026 earnings call: “We do expect to support GTA Online going forward”, adding that Take-Two applies “significant resources to that” and that “the cadence hasn't really changed”.

So the game you are playing now is not being switched off when GTA VI arrives. Take-Two has said so twice, on the record, six months apart.

The part nobody has confirmed

  • Confirmed

The official PlayStation Store listing describes Grand Theft Auto VI as “a single-player experience”.

PlayStation Store product page, June 2026
  • No word

An online or multiplayer mode for GTA VI, at launch or afterwards. Rockstar has announced nothing, named nothing, and shown nothing.

    No Rockstar announcement exists
  • Unconfirmed

Readings of Take-Two's earnings language about sustaining “this new level of scale” as a hint at a future online mode. That is analyst interpretation of a financial statement, not a product announcement.

Why the distinction matters. “Take-Two confirms online support” headlines are technically accurate and practically misleading. The commitment is to the existing GTA Online service attached to GTA V. It says nothing whatsoever about whether the new game has a multiplayer component. Those are separate products, separate teams and separate decisions.

What would be reasonable to expect, and why we are not saying it

GTA Online has been one of the most commercially successful things Take-Two has ever done. It would be surprising if the company never built an equivalent for GTA VI, and essentially every analyst expects one eventually.

That is a reasonable expectation. It is not information. This site does not publish reasonable expectations as facts, because the entire value of reading here rather than somewhere else is that when we say something is confirmed, it is confirmed.

If Rockstar announces an online mode, it will be on the newswire within the hour and on this page shortly after.

What has not been addressed at all

  • No word

Whether GTA Online progress, money or characters would carry across to anything in GTA VI.

No statement, and no mode to carry them to
  • No word

Whether GTA V's single-player continues to receive support or remains on sale after November.

    No statement found either way
  • No word

Whether GTA+, the subscription attached to GTA Online, changes in any way.

    No statement
