Leonida and the Real Florida
Rockstar has been open about the inspiration and specific about almost nothing else. This page gives you what the studio actually said, and refuses to do the thing every other page does next.
What Rockstar has said
- Confirmed
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to Famitsu: “Modern-day Florida and Miami have an enormous variety of people, lifestyles and areas.”
Famitsu interview, September 2026 - Confirmed
Rockstar's narrative team has described extensive on-the-ground research. VP of narrative Rupert Humphries: the team meets “ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers and anyone notorious or influential who'll take our calls”.
Dazed, August 2026 - Confirmed
Nelson has framed the game as a time capsule, referencing how GTA IV captured 2008 New York and saying he wants people to look back and say “that's what 2026 was like”.
Famitsu interview, September 2026
The Florida basis was never seriously in doubt — Vice City has been a fictionalised Miami since 2002. What is new is Rockstar saying it plainly, and saying that the target is the present day rather than a period piece. GTA VI is set now. That is a departure from Vice City in 1986.
The named places, and what we will not do with them
Rockstar has named seven locations: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga and Leonida Penitentiary.
Every other site will now hand you a table mapping those to real Florida places. We are not going to, and the reason is worth a paragraph.
Rockstar has never confirmed a single one of those correspondences. Some are near-obvious from the name alone — a place called Grassrivers in a Florida-inspired state invites a comparison anyone can make. But “this is obviously based on that” is a reader's inference, and printing it in a table with a confident heading converts an inference into what looks like a fact. That is precisely the move this site exists to avoid. Make the inference yourself; it is a good one. We are just not going to dress it up as information.
What the state name suggests
Rockstar has always renamed its states rather than using real ones: San Andreas for California, Alderney for New Jersey. Leonida follows that pattern for Florida. Rockstar has not explained the choice of name and we have not found any statement on it.
Why the present day matters
Setting this in 2026 rather than the eighties changes what the game can be about, and it is the most substantive thing Rockstar has revealed about its intentions.
A period Vice City is a genre exercise — neon, pastels, cocaine, Miami Vice. A present-day Leonida has social media, phone cameras, rideshare apps, influencers and streamers, and a police force with modern surveillance. The phone features Rockstar showed in An Extended Look — the vehicle-checking app, the rideshare app — only make sense in a contemporary setting.
It also raises the bar. A time capsule of 2008 New York worked because the game had a point of view about it. Rockstar is explicitly claiming that ambition for 2026 Florida, which is a much harder target while you are standing in it.
