Scale
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?
Rockstar has answered this once, in relative terms, and never in numbers. Here is that answer drawn to scale — and an explanation of where the figures everyone quotes actually come from.
What Rockstar actually said
- Confirmed
The map is roughly twice the size of GTA V's.

It is about three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's.

Vice City alone is around twice the size of Los Santos.

Drawn to scale
Those two comparisons fix the relationship between all three maps. If GTA VI is twice GTA V and three times Red Dead 2, then GTA V is one and a half times Red Dead 2. Areas of 3, 1.5 and 1:
Why every square-mileage figure is an estimate
This is the part worth understanding, because it explains why no two sites agree.
Rockstar has never published a size for GTA V either. The figures people use for it — and there are several, differing by a lot — come from players measuring in-game distances, which involves assumptions about scale, about where the map boundary is, and about whether water counts.
So when a site tells you GTA VI is a specific number of square miles, the chain is: someone's estimate of GTA V's size, multiplied by Rockstar's approximate word “twice”, presented as a measurement. Two layers of approximation and a rounding, printed as a fact.
We are not going to add a third layer by picking one of those estimates. If Rockstar publishes a figure, it will be on this page within the hour.
What “twice the size” does and does not mean
Area is not the same as content, and this is where expectations tend to go wrong.
- Twice the area is not twice the game. Red Dead Redemption 2's map is smaller than GTA V's and the game is longer. Density, not acreage, determines how long you spend somewhere.
- Some of it will be water and wilderness. Rockstar has named the Leonida Keys and a region called Grassrivers. Florida's geography is substantially wetland and coast, and open water inflates an area figure without adding much to do.
- The city comparison is the more useful number. Vice City at roughly twice Los Santos is a claim about the part you will spend most of your time in, and it is the one worth paying attention to.
The numbers Rockstar has given about density
The animation figure is the one that says most about density. It is a claim about how much is happening in the world rather than how large it is, and it is Rockstar's own number rather than anyone's estimate.
